Sparrows & Stories

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Matthew 10:29-31

This verse has always been encouraging to me but particularly when we moved to the city after a 10 year country church placement. While adjusting to city life, I quickly learnt that sparrows were considered the ‘pest of the inner city cafes’ (I was yet to meet pigeons!). They were a regular at all the best bakeries and coffee hubs, flitting in between tables and chair legs seeking crumbs and leftover chips. While I found that few of my new friends enjoyed their company, I used to love slipping them bits of food and watching them dart off towards their nests to share
a newly found feast.

Sparrows in the busy city seem to be so insignificant. But I found that each time I saw one sneaking into a shopping centre to sit on a window sill, or darting around a bin hoping for some water on a hot day that I was reminded how important they are to a God who delighted in making them. I love knowing He knows where they are at all times and what they’re up to or where their home is, even if no one else cares.

This month’s Rejuven8 verse is particularly poignant to me as we’re completing our clergy family research. After spending 2 years with these people and their walks through ministry life, I’ve come to love each one and appreciate how unique and special they are. Some live in cities full of support systems and opportunities, while others are serving in tiny country churches 30 minutes from the nearest shop. Each one matters and is precious not just to me, but to God and I find great comfort knowing that even in their darkest moments filled with fear and grief, there is a God who knows where they’re at and what He has in store for them in the next chapter of their lives.

For anyone this month who might feel a bit like a sparrow in a big city, I hope this verse gives you some comfort, and this video gives you a smile as you go about your ministry life with all it’s ups, downs and in betweens.
