The Joy of the Doorkeeper

“For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a door keeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.” - Psalm 84:10

I returned from leave in Europe recently to a sermon series at our church on the
Psalms. One of our staff members spoke on Psalm 84 and it struck me again the
great privilege it is to be part of the Kingdom of God.

I was raised outside the church, for my wider family it was always a matter of shame that I had become a Christian and reprehensible that I eventually became
an ordained minister.

Europe, of course, reminds us of the scale of God’s kingdom. Even if some of the
churches and art we see are fossils that are waiting to have new life breathed into
them, in world history the scope, depth, influence and cultural variety of God’s
people is immense and the future of this Kingdom is eternal.

Listening to my friend expound Psalm 84 I realised afresh that I would rather have
the least part in the Kingdom of God than be anywhere else. I am content to keep
doors so others may be welcomed into this Kingdom.
